Crypto Silk Road

Path of crypto

People think of two things when they hear “Silk Road”.

  • First, it is the medieval trade route linking the East to the West.
  • And the second is the dark-web marketplace that became an ATM of the FBI’s favorite takedown stories.

This, however, is going to be about neither. A tale thousands of the times have been told and wrapped well when the founder got pardoned earlier in the year.

That’s right, the real Silk Road. The camels, caravans, spices, cities that glittered in the desert sun. More than a trading route, it was a cultural superhighway on which goods, knowledge, religion, and stories traveled side-by-side. The places managed to reinvent with that road faded into history. But there would be one place that seems to have stumbled and never fully recaptured its previous steadiness: Central Asia.

Once home to the great Khwarezmian Empire—well-off, mighty but incompletely aware of Genghis Khan’s ambitions—the region has been feeling the cost, ever since. Eight centuries later, however, something quite interesting is happening in this space: Central Asia is venturing onto a fresh role quite different from all earlier ones in this digital road.

Asia’s Crypto DNA

Not at all surprising, Asia, from day one, has been center stage for cryptos.

  • That mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto? Very much Japanese in name.
  • The first big exchange, MtGox? Also Japan.
  • The sheer rocket raise of Bitcoin in the year of 2013—all driven by Chinese exchanges.

In the course of the years, China has monopolized for itself not only the mining of crypto but also the making of equipment and coins out of it. Then, boom—forced closing of mining units left scattered units throughout every corner of the earth.

But, Asia has not disappeared from the picture. Not by a long shot.

  • Some of the biggest exchanges currently enjoy quiet backing by Chinese entrepreneurs.
  • Trading volumes remain sky-high across the Far East.

This is where East falters where the regulation of crypto is concerned—governments like slamming the brakes on initiatives rather than opening doors. That is the primary reason why attention shifted westward during the past couple of years to the UAE.

  • Crypto companies flock there.
  • More events and conferences happen in Dubai and Abu Dhabi together than anywhere else.
  • If there is a capital of crypto in the world, maybe it is over here in the desert.

Let Central Asia Enter

But here comes the twist: a heart of Asia is now showing signs of life—with Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan galloping into crypto in a big way.

  • Both have recently passed laws creating so-called strategic reserves of crypto.
  • This is essentially storing digital assets like countries store gold.
  • And they’re not done yet.
  • Kazakhstan is quickly becoming a mining destination as miners migrate to the country after a crackdown in China.
  • Similarly, Kyrgyzstan is coming up with laws and healthy plans.
  • They are staking a claim on the new frontier of crypto.

Not bad for two countries that most people probably don’t think of when considering technology.

Why It Matters

Every great innovation is an opportunity for the underdogs to catch up—or even overtake.

  • When the Internet exploded, no one would have been able to predict that Estonia would stand as a digital frontrunner. Yet here we are.
  • Such reshuffling is happening currently with cryptocurrency and blockchain at early chapters in their history.

Of course, the decisions made by governments today—banning or regulating or embracing crypto—could define their roles in the global economy for the coming decades. And Central Asia seems to be saying: we are in.

A New Silk Road?

the new silk road

More or less poetic. The original Silk Road connected Central Asia with the crossroads of the world. That road would fade, the empire fall, and centuries pass, offering no opportunity for the intersection to reclaim its spotlight.

But now—from the world of digital currency and global networks—it has the chance to build a much more remarkable sort of Silk Road:

  • One that does not require camels or caravans.
  • One that runs on servers and miners.

Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are not likely to become crypto capitals tomorrow, but what these states have done is that they have created a very stirring barometer for the reminder of how history is usually cyclical.

The world economic map is not a static one but changes with each new innovation. And if the crypto revolution is to turn into a long-lasting wave, expect Central Asia to somehow ride right in the middle of it.
