Kohaku

Ethereum has always been at the center of innovation in the blockchain space. However, for all the progress, privacy and wallet security have always been a hard nut to crack. Now, Ethereum developers are taking this head-on with Kohaku, a project set up for a rehash on how wallets treat privacy, recovery, and decentralized transactions.

What Kohaku is?

Kohaku is not a purse unto itself, it is a kit. It is a modular framework for wallet developers and power users who wish to have more control over the handling of their own data, assets, and transactions.

Announced by Nicolas Consigny, a coordinator with the Ethereum Foundation, Kohaku is meant to build wallets that incorporate privacy as a core feature and not an alternative. On the roadmap for Kohaku, two key outcomes are identified:

An SDK for building privacy-first wallets.

A reference wallet demonstrating actual use of these tools.

The first implementation is expected to be a browser extension created with Ambire Wallet for users who prefer a deep interaction with their digital assets.

The Big Idea—Privacy by Design

For years now, most crypto wallets have relied on centralized servers for key functions, like broadcasting transactions or syncing user data. This setup was convenient but had an enormous trade-off for privacy — it allowed intermediaries to glean who was transacting, from where, and with what frequency.

This is what Kohaku will try saving:

  • Private transactions: Tools to send and receive crypto without exposing the history of your address.
  • Hidden IP addresses: Your internet actions cannot be monitored.
  • Isolated DApp accounts: Each DApp you use can have its own wallet instance, lessening cross-tracking risks.
  • Peer-to-peer broadcasting: Transactions can be sent directly between peers instead of through a centralized RPC (Remote Procedure Call) server.

These would ensure that your wallet serves, not any third-party service, as your privacy gatekeeper.

Zero-Knowledge Meets Real-World Usability

One of its alluring features is in its recovery. Getting locked out of one’s wallet has, since time immemorial, been a nightmare for all crypto users; either you write down your seed phrase and hope you don’t lose it, or you rely on some sort of assurance provided by some centralized “recovery” system, which sets the whole idea of decentralization on its head.

Kohaku is a bit smarter and employs zero-knowledge (ZK) tools like ZK Email and Anon Aadhaar.

Put in layman’s terms:

ZK Email allows users to verify ownership of an email account without revealing the email itself. It’s like proving you know a secret without ever saying what it is.

Anon Aadhaar (developed by Privacy & Scaling Explorations) lets users prove their identity in a privacy-preserving way, using cryptography instead of paperwork.

This combo denotes a secure decentralized way to recover wallets, no third parties, no data leaking, no compromises.

Building Privacy “Close to the Silicon”

Kohaku has even loftier ambitions. The idea is to bring security and privacy as close to the devices themselves as possible — what they call “close to the silicon.”

In practical terms, this would mean having built a native Ethereum browser where users can safely navigate DApps, IPFS content, and decentralized services without having to worry about being tracked, data leaks, or rogue extensions. An ecosystem-wide rethink of what wallet security may look like.

A Community Effort

Kohaku is not a one-man show. It is being built in collaboration with some of the most respected Ethereum teams, including:

  • Ambire
  • Railgun
  • DeFi Wonderland
  • Helios
  • Oblivious Labs

And given it’s open-source, anyone from anywhere can chip in, test, or fork the code through the project GitHub repositories. This brings a lot of transparency into the process and encourages collaboration—the way of doing open development Ethereum has become known for.

The Bigger Picture: Ethereum’s Push for Privacy.

Kohaku is part of an overarching initiative dubbed Ethereum Privacy Cluster, which unites 47+ researchers, engineers, and cryptographers across the Ethereum ecosystem. Their common goal? To make privacy a first-class citizen in Ethereum’s layer-1 infrastructure — not just something bolted on later.

All of them aim to put the power back into the users’ hands regarding their data and activity without compromising transparency or decentralization.
