Since its inception in 2022, when it pulled off the impossible and succeeded Game of Thrones, the House of the Dragon has been on a rampage. Fans were still debating the mark drama with that last season, with expectations running high. This time, it focused on the rise (and fall again) of the House of Targaryen, almost 200 years before the events in Thrones.
The first season, being less of Burning and more of Slow Build. Lots of interesting court intrigues, quite some time jumps to leave the audiences scratching their heads, and, needless to say, dragons. Cinematography was beautiful, Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith’s performances stood out, but it didn’t set the cultural wildfire that Thrones used to. And maybe it, House of the Dragon, is fine with that.
Current Buzz
Right now, things started being amped up with Season 2. The war drums were finally beating louder in the Dance of the Dragons-your colossal battles, dragon-on-dragon violence, and political betrayals stacking up like a house of cards.
Mixed-but mostly positive. It’s still pulling in ratings gargantuan for HBO, but without quite the rush of phenomenon its elder sibling did. Some find their pacing jumping back and forth and the tone shifting from epic to soap opera, while others prefer the character-driven drama. At times, it gets polarizing-but that is just the sign that it’s doing something interesting.
When Is Season 3 Coming Out?
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and HBO Max Content stated “I think it’ll be just outside of [the 2026 Emmy eligibility window].” That would mean that we could expect it to air sometime at the beginning of June 2026 at the earliest. We have to take into account the post-production requirements, as those dragons certainly won’t animate themselves-and HBO won’t rush with it.
In other words, yes, it will be a long wait. But perhaps that is for the best. A bit of distance will allow the writers to tighten things up and let the momentum swell once more. We don’t want the show to have a scrambled ending like Game of Thrones did, do we?
